Another secret that I have been using on the
sly and have decided to share. Dry Gammarus! Give them
something to crunch on. Either added to base mixes
or used in PVA bags, these are natural fish food.
However, they all float and need soaking before
they sink, that means you can keep adding them to your base mix to make popups or neutral bouyancy baits.
I like to add handfuls of gammarusto hemp before soaking
and boiling, this makes all of them sink, increasing the already tremendous pulling power of hemp. They have a nice fishy shrimpy smell that seems to permeate the hemp. Excellent for crushing and adding to pastes for high leakage winter barbel fishing.
Using an attractor liquid to make them sink is
another way I have used them to great effect.
Put the dry crustaceans in a tub, adding a liquid
(krill, aminol, CSL etc) and leave to soak for
a couple of weeks. With PVA bags you can produce
piles of natural food that ooze whatever liquid
you want to fill them with. One favourite is the
Biored juice, that turns the whole mix deep red
and hangs on the bottom in a red peppery cloud.
The other Juices sometimes have a tendency to
preserve stocking type PVA if left to soak, worth
bearing in mind for deeper water. A solid PVA
bag is preferable for use with neat juices in
that the water will dissolve the outside of the
bag, letting the contents do their thing!
